The Akron Auxiliary currently has 47 members of which 17 are honorary and 3 are men. We always welcome new members, and continue to support the Akron Turner Club with hard work and monetary donations. We enjoy trips to different wineries, dinner theaters, train rides through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, trips to casinos and sports events including baseball games at the Akron Aeros (farm team for the Cleveland Indians).
We donate to: The Salvation Army, Battered Women's Shelter, The American Cancer Society, Easter baskets for deprived children, Christmas toys for needy children, Haven of Rest, Susan G. Komen Fund for the Cure, Ronald McDonald Christmas tree, Harvest for Hunger and various other charitable organizations.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Akron Turnverein received their charter from the National Auxiliary on January 31, 1904. The wives of the Akron members formed their own section as women were not permitted to Join the Akron Turnverein. They became known as "Die Damen Section des Akron Turnverein". There were twenty charter members present at that first meeting.
The initial intent of the women was to help the men's organization repair the Akron Turnverein building after a cyclone hit in May 1890. A week long bazaar was orgainzed and successfully raised over $800, more than enough to fix the structure. As more women joined, more events were held and more money raised. At the silver jubilee of the club in 1910, the ladies presented the Akron Turnverein with $3,000, demonstrating the deep loyalty and commitment to the Turner movement, as they worked tirelessly to support the club, by any means, including scrubbing, painting, cooking, holding raffles or selling tea bags and dish cloths.
It is important to note that the Ladies Auxiliary was, at times, directly responsible for holding the club together, especially in the 1940's when membership was low due to World War II. It was during this time that the Akron Turnverein changed its name to the Akron Turner Club.
In the mid 1970's, the 89 year old club was demolished by the City of Akron for urban renewal and the Turners were forced to find a new home. For two years Auxiliary meetings were held in members private homes. In 1975, Turner members took control of the old Aqua Springs in Springfield Township.

In 1976 the Auxiliary held their first meeting in the new location. Membership dropped from the previous 105 at the old Grant St. location but the resolve hadn't changed. When the move was made to Aqua Springs, there were only 50 regular members to do all of the work and it was up to the Ladies Auxiliary to take responsibility for paying two of the club's monthly bills. The biggest money makers during the 1970's were the annual arts, crafts & cookie auction and the Sunday morning breakfasts.
During the 1980's many longtime members passed and membership was declining. In 1985 the "Ladies" Auxiliary opened up its membership to men and became The Auxiliary. John Kerr was the first male member and became the official auctioneer at our annual arts & crafts auction.
In March 2004 the Auxiliary celeberated their 100th Anniversary with a party and skit of the very first meeting held in 1904. Sandy Martin, June Ewing, Ruth Vera & Nancy Donatelli dressed in the clothes of the era and made their best attempt to speak German to one another. Twenty-one members were in attendance.
At the National Convention in 2006, The National Ladies Auxiliary tearfully came to an end and it was up to each individual society auxiliary to choose to disband or continue. Akron chose to keep going, and we continue to support our club everyday!
